Linen Stitch

Eftersom jag har stickat så många sockar så blir det ju endel smånystan av sockgarn över. Så jag har funderat på vad jag ska göra med dem. Ett förslag är att sticka en mixa och matcha sjal i linen stitch (vet inte vad det heter på svenska), vilket ger en nästan vävd struktur, fast ändå förvånandsvärt töjbar. Jag har därför stickat en liten provlapp. Tycker om resultatet, fast funderar på om det är något annat det kan användas till och inte just en sjal. Allt sockgarn är inte supermjukt nämligen - fungerar bra som sock, men inte runt halsen. Så funderandet fortsätter...

Since I have knitted quite a few socks, I have ended up with quite a hoard of left over little sock yarn balls. So what to make with them? One suggestion is knitting a mix and match shawl using the linen stitch, this gives almost a woven structure, but also surprisingly stretchy! To give it a try I knitted a little sample. I like the result, but I am still not convinced shawl is the best idea for my yarn. Not all sock yarn is soft and smooth - ok for feet but not great around your neck. So the thinking continues...

Bästa presenten!

Bästa presenten måste ju vara två krylliga hasselbuskar (Corylus avellana 'Contorta') som vill flytta in och bli omhändertagna. Spenderade lördagseftermiddagen med att plantera dem i deras nya hem. Nu gäller det bara att hålla tummarna att de tar sig.

The best present has to be two curly hazels (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'), asking to be looked after and wanting to move in. I spent Saturday afternoon planting them at their new home. Fingers crossed they will survive!

Eftersom den krylliga hasseln är ympad på vanlig hassel så blir det endel spikraka grenar som växer ut från basen. De får man helt enkelt klippa bort. Sedan kan ju avklippet bli en liten vårlig krans. Varför inte? När buskarna tagit sig så tänker jag försöka ge mig på de kraftigare raka stubbarna också. Fast det blir ingen krans av dem..

Since the curly hazel is grafted on normal hazel you will get a few very straight branches growing at the base. They just have to be cut off. And then you can always use your off-cuts to make a spring wreath. Why not? When the bushes have taken I will try to remove the thicker straight stumps as well. But they will not be made into a wreath..

Socksamling/Sock collection

Tre par sockar har jag vevat ihop den senaste tiden. Jag försvarar mig med att jag är frusen.

I have knitted three pairs of socks lately. My defense is that I am cold.

Första paret är stickat i King Cole Zig Zag 4ply i färgen Harmony. Hm... garnskämt? Jag tänker inte harmoni när jag ser dem och jag köpte garnet enbart för att färgerna var så vilda och galna.

The first pair is knitted using King Cole Zig Zag 4ply in the colour Harmony. Hm... yarn joke? I do not think harmony when I see them, the reason why I bought the yarn in the fist place was because the colours are so wild and crazy.

Andra paret är ytterligare ett par spiralsockar. Dessa stickade jag i Opal Fresh & Juicy i färgen fruchtige Pralinen.

The second pair is yet another pair of spiral socks. These are knitted using Opal Fresh & Juicy in the colour fruchtige Pralinen.

Sista paret (för denna gången) är stickade i Opal 4ply mit Silbereffekt i färgen Glamour. Jag känner mig definitivt glamourös i dessa sockar, men det beror mer på att det är lite silverstänk här och där, som dessvärre inte fotograferas speciellt bra.

The last pair (this time around..) is knitted using Opal 4ply mit Silbereffekt in the colour Glamour. I definitely feel glamorous wearing these socks, but that is more down to the little silver specks here and there, although they do not photograph very well. 

Nu stickar jag på en sjal. Någon måtta får det ju vara!?

I am now knitting a shawl. There has to be limits!?

I knit and plant and plant and knit. Already cucumber, tomatoes and sweet-peas have started growing.

Pale Green är finaste färgen

Den senaste tidens garnskapande har blivit en mormorsrutefilt. Det känns som om det var väldigt länge sedan jag sist virkade rutor. Pop tycker om den ljusa aqua-gröna färgen och efterfrågade en filt. Så länge som jag får förfrågan så virkar jag (fast förresten annars också! Men det är fint när barnen frågar).

Jag har använt King Cole Bamboo Cotton DK i färgerna svart, vit, pale green och så den blåturkosa som jag inte hade någon etikett kvar till och som verkar ha utgått? Det är något nästan meditativt att virka mormorsrutor och jag tycker speciellt om när de ligger i prydliga högar och väntar på att bli ihopvirkade.



Pale green is the prettiest colour

The past few weeks yarn crafting has resulted in a granny-square blanket. It feels like it has been ages since I last crocheted squares. Pop likes the pale aqua green colour and requested a blanket. As long as I get requests I will crochet (and obviously at other times as well, but it is lovely when the children put in requests!)

I have used  King Cole Bamboo Cotton DK in black, white, pale green and the blue turquoise, I have lost the label for that one unfortunately and it looks like it is no longer in production? I find granny-squares almost meditative to crochet and I specially like it when they are piled up neatly waiting to be joined together.

What better way to start the new year than with a pair of knitted socks?

Where to begin with all the loveliness? Firstly the yarn of course! This was a Christmas present from Maria. We normally give each other something crafty for Christmas every year, and do I need to say that opening her gift is one of the highlights? Anyhow this time we ended up doing the Great Big Sock Yarn Swap, as I bought her sock yarn as well.

The beautiful skein I found under my tree is bought from Sam from Betsy Makes and is a superwash merino/nylon blend, in the colour Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. And fun it has been! A delight to knit with. And even more so for using Winwick Mum's (yes back to the experts again) Easy Cable Sock pattern. I did question the word easy, but as usual the patterns are great at explaining each step, so you don't feel daunted by them. Saying that, I still cannot help but being a bit amazed that I actually ended up getting the cables....  I also learnt a new heal stitch from this pattern, which turned out beautifully. I am very happy with these socks. A joy to knit and a joy to wear!

And lovely snowdrop! Even though we have frost on the lawn in the morning this beauty brings a promise of spring!

Sockervadd-sockar

Eller spiralsockar (nästan)på mormors vis.

Min mormor stickade spiralsockar. I en något mer brunorange ton än vad man normalt hittar, men det var på tidigt 80-tal och då fanns det förmodligen en hel del 70-talsgarn kvar i gömmorna att använda upp. I vilket fall som helst så ville jag ha en enkel sockmodell men dock med lite struktur och då kom tanken på de gamla spiralsockarna fram. 

Sockfakta

Garn: Sock Yarn från Hedgehog fibres, handfärgat i Pinky någonting som jag inte kan uttyda, 100g/400m

Stickor: 3mm rundstickor (hade nog kunnat använda 2.5)

Mönster: Mormors/internet/gammal tidning och eget. Men i princip 60m som stickas 5a, 5r i 4 varv och sedan förskjuter man grupperna 1m antingen åt höger eller åt vänster beroende på hur sockan ska vrida sig, sedan stickas detta 4 varv och sedan förskjuts grupperna igen. Sticka på tills sockan är lagom lång och ta sedan in för tårna. Alltså inget hälkrångel! Jag valde även att sticka en mudd först, men det är inte helt nödvändigt.

Candy floss socks

Or spiral socks (almost) the way my grandmother used to make them.

My grandmother used to knit spiral socks. In a slightly more brown/orange nuance than what you usually find, but it was the early 80s and I suppose she had some 70s yarn still in her stash begging to be knitted into something. Anyhow I wanted a simple sock model, but still with some pattern in the knitting so I started thinking about spiral socks.

Sock facts

Yarn: Hand dyed Sock Yarn from Hedgehog fibres in colour Pinky something ( I cannot read it) 100g/400m

Needles: 3mm circular (could probably have used 2.5mm)

Pattern: My grandmothers/internet/old magazine/own. Simply cast on 60m, then knit groups of 5k5p for 4 rounds, then shift the groups 1s either to the left or to the right depending on how you want the spiral to twist and then repeat. Keep going until the sock is long enough and then shape the toes. And note - NO heal palaver!! I choose to knit a cuff on mine as well, but it is not necessary. 

I am happy to report I now have warm and toasty toes!
